“Something to chew on over breakfast”

One of the most enjoyable aspects of leadership involves mentoring a younger person who has talent and is eager to step up.

It’s a bit like organic gardening. The thrill of observing seedlings blossom into tall sunflowers is one of the most gratifying experiences. Our ‘charge’ steps up, we also learn and grow as part of the process, they become a great role model to all those they connect with, and we leave a legacy for the future generation of leaders.

I recall sitting on the plane next to a former US Secretary of State who asked me what I did for a job. I told him I’m in the leadership business.

“I don’t consider myself to be a leader”, he quipped, “but I previously worked in the next office to four US Presidents and I noticed a few things.”

“What was the biggest insight you gained?”, I asked

“The taller they are, in terms of capability, the wider their shadow-side.” he replied.

Last week, I’ve had the chance to facilitate another CE CLASS, learning with and from four chief executives running large organisation’s across business and government sectors. Some fascinating learnings and insights ensue.

Last evening, as I was leaving work and locking the door of our office, a 30-something year old woman from our neighbouring office said hello and started a conversation with me. “What do you guys actually do?”, she asked.
